Bo Diddley - Who do you love

First performance: 23/03/1988

Coverinfo

Bruce used the Bo Diddley intro 22 times during the "Tunnel of Love tour". Just like Mona and Hey Bo Diddley-  two other Bo Diddley songs - "who do you love ?" was also used as a built up intro to "she’s the one" . Musically, "she’s the one" has a staccato beat and a rhythm reminiscent of that of 'Bo Diddley' songs. As if to emphasize the Diddley-like riff, Springsteen has led into 'She's the One' with a Diddley song - either "hey Bo Diddley", "Mona" or " who do you love ? " She’s the one is definitely a hidden tribute song to Bo Diddley.

Songinfo

"Who Do You Love" is a song written by American rock and roll pioneer Bo Diddley. Recorded in 1956, it is one of his most popular and enduring works. Bo Diddley wrote "Who Do You Love" in 1956. The idea came to him in Kansas City, where he heard a group of children trying to out-brag one another using a particular rhythm. "It was like an African chant, and I wanted words that would suit it".

Lyrics

I walk 47 miles of barbed wire
I use a cobra snake for a necktie
I got a brand new house on the roadside
Made from rattlesnake hide

I got a brand new chimney made on top
Made out of a human skull
Now come on take a walk with me Arlene
And tell me who do you love?

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Tombstone hand
And a graveyard mine
Just 22
And I don't mind dying

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

I rode around the town
Use a rattlesnake whip
Take it easy Arlene
Don't give me no lip

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Night was dark but the sky was blue
Down the alley, ice-wagon flew
Hit a bump and somebody screamed
You should have heard just what I've seen

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?

Arlene took me
By my hand
And she said, "Ooowee bo
You know I understand"

Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
Who do you love?
