First performance: 23/02/1985

Bruce performed the song only once:
1985-02-23 Forum (The), Inglewood, CA
Bruce and Madonna join Prince on stage at Inglewood's Forum during his Purple Rain Tour. Bruce's (and Madonna's) participation on the latter two tracks is not absolutely confirmed, but seems likely based on Prince's shout of "Bruce!" near the beginning of "America".
SOUNDCLOUDAt 7:04, you can hear Prince ask Bruce: "Bruce, you want to play something?" And then Bruce plays some guitar. Shelia E gets in on the action.
Madonna is on the tambourine.

"Baby I'm a Star" is a song written and recorded by American musician Prince from his album Purple Rain. It is also the B-side on the "Take Me with U". Baby I'm a Star" was originally composed and demoed by Prince during the summer of 1981. The version on Purple Rain was re-recorded with The Revolution during a live performance in 1983 (the debut performance of Wendy Melvoin). Prince later reworked the live recording in the studio, adding overdubs and other refinements. The upbeat song is about pop stardom, specifically a rising star as the chorus states "You might not know it now, baby, but I are — I'm a star. I don't wanna stop 'til I reach the top." This would coincide with Prince's status in 1982. Musically, it is a dance number propelled by a drum machine pattern and an understated bass. The song makes heavy use of rapidly played synthesizers, often made to simulate a horn section (Prince would sometimes add a real horn section to the song in later performances). Revolution member Doctor Fink gets a call-out in the song to deliver a synth solo. The song also contains an unusual backmasking at the beginning and end of the song:

"So like, fuck them man! What do they know?
All their taste is in their mouth
Really, what the fuck do they know?
Come on, baby

Other cover versions

  • Tina Turner
  • P. Diddy sampled the song on his song "Special Feeling", featuring singer Mika Lett, released on his album Press Play.

Bruce on the artist

The only time Bruce Springsteen and Prince shared the stage was during a 23 Feb 1985 Price concert at The Forum in Inglewood, CA, when Springsteen joined Prince onstage .
"Tonight we want to dedicate our show to Prince of course", he said. "There's never been any better bandleader, showman, songwriter, arranger. Whenever I would catch one of his shows I would always leave humbled. I'm going to miss that"

Hey, look me over
Tell me do you like what you see?
Hey, I ain't got no money
But honey, I'm rich on personality
Hey, check it all out
Baby, I know what it's all about
Before the night is through
You will see my point of view
Even if I have to scream and shout
Baby, I'm a star
Might not know it now
Baby, but I are, I'm a star
I don't want to stop, till I reach the top
Sing it, we all are a star
Hey, take a listen
Tell me do you like what you hear?
If it don't turn you on
Just say a word, I'm gone
Honey, I know ain't nothing wrong with your ears
Hey, check it all out
Better look now or it just might be too late
My lucks gonna change tonight
There's gotta be a better life
Take a picture sweetie, I ain't got time to waste
Oh, baby I'm a star
Might not know it now
Baby but I are, I'm a star
I don't want to stop, till I reach the top
Sing it, we all are a star
Everybody say, nothing come too easy
When you got it baby, nothing come too hard
You'll see what I'm all about
If I gotta scream and shout
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Might not know it now
Baby but I are, I'm a star
I don't want to stop, till I reach the top
Sing it, star
Baby, baby, baby
Oh, baby, I'm a star
Baby, baby, baby
We all are a star, yeah
We all are a star, yeah, doctor
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby
We all are a star
