"Knock On Wood" is a 1966 hit song written by Eddie Floyd and Steve Cropper and originally performed by Floyd. Steve Cropper has stated in interviews that there was a lightning storm the night that he and Eddie wrote the song, hence the lyrics 'It's like thunder and lightning, The way you love me is frightening'.

Bruce on the artist

Bruce on Eddie Floyd 21 Mar 1976 at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park :

Springsteen called Eddie Floyd that day and introduced himself to him.

"Him and Southside Johnny were just regular guys I hadn't met before and I basically hadn't heard of him back then," Floyd told Boss Tracks in 2009. "When [Springsteen] called there were people in the studio who did realize who was calling". Later that night Floyd joined Springsteen onstage sharing vocals with the upcoming star on two of his own compositions, "Knock on wood" and "Raise your hand". Springsteen introduced Floyd saying:

"I'm honoured enough to have in the audience tonight a man that I have admired and listened to his music for many, many years. A man who, without his music, I wouldn't be here because he's the guy that turned me on to the whole Sax sound and the R&B sound and we're lucky enough he's gonna come out and do... He's written so many great songs I can't even imagine. He's gonna come out and do a few numbers with us. Please give a warm round of applause for Mr. Eddie Floyd!"

Lyrics

I don't want to lose this good thing that I've got
'Cause if I do, I would surely, surely loose a lot
'Cause your love is better than any love I know

It's like thunder, lightning
The way you love me is frightening
I'd better knock on wood, baby

I'm not superstitious about you, but I can't take no chance
You got me spinning, baby, baby, I'm in a trance
'Cause your love is better than any love I know

It's like thunder, lightning
The way you love me is frightening
I'd better knock on wood, baby

It's no secret, that woman is my loving cup
Well, she sees to it that I get enough
Just one touch from her, you know it means so much

It's like thunder, lightning
The way you love me is frightening
I'd better knock on wood, baby
I better knock, knock, knock

Think I better knock, knock, knock on wood
Think I better knock, knock, knock on wood
Think I better knock, knock, knock on wood
Think I better knock, knock, knock
